Kids Reading Online vs. Printed Media Discussed in NY Times Article
Take time to read the NY Times article and comments from my friend and blogger, Tom Landini about reading online vs. offline. I have added some comments of my own below the article link. The post in Tom’s blog is called:
Breathe In, Breathe Out: Attending to Reading: On and Off the Web.
This is an interesting post on the Blog Breathe In, Breathe Out which links to a N.Y. Times article about kids reading on the web vs. traditional print media.
It currently is not an issue at my house. My kids (9,11,11,13) use the internet for games, music and research for school reports. Their school libraries are among the biggest and best stocked in the state of Delaware so they are traditional print readers at this point in time. Plus, computers don’t have that “roomful of books” smell that we all love so much.
A quote from the Times story:
Experts on reading difficulties suggest that for struggling readers, the Web may be a better way to glean information. “When you read online there are always graphics,” said Sally Shaywitz, the author of “Overcoming Dyslexia” and a Yale professor. “I think it’s just more comfortable and — I hate to say easier — but it more meets the needs of somebody who might not be a fluent reader.”
My 13 year old daughter has “auditory processing disorder” and disagrees with the Yale professor quoted above. She has 2 main reasons to read a story in a book vs. on a computer screen.
- A Computer screen can give her a headache if she is looking at it too long.
- She can’t lay down in bed to read the computer…duh!
So there you have it…real world input from a 13 year old…to a Yale professor. It’s all about comfort to my girl. See ya soon. Dean Geyer
